Wood Deck

Our wood decks are all constructed with pressure-treated lumber rated for ground contact with a warrantee against termites and fungus. We will use either 2×8 or 2×10 joists 12โ€ O.C. with beams and support posts to meet or exceed the county code. All of our decking and wood railing elements are installed with exterior wood screws. The beauty of natural wood comes together with budget-friendly options.

What a Pressure-Treated Deck Gets You

Square footage. That is the honest answer. Pressure-treated Southern Yellow Pine is the least expensive deck surface we install, which means for a fixed budget a wood deck is simply bigger than a composite one. If what you need is a 20 by 16 deck and the composite version only pencils out at 14 by 12, wood is the right call and we will tell you so.

We do not cut the frame to hit the price, either. Wood decks get the same framing standard as everything else we build, at 12 inches on center rather than the code minimum. Railing is 4×4 posts, 2×2 balusters, and 2×4 rails, ready to paint or stain. The deck is trimmed at the fascia with a 1×4 band, and the stairs get a 2×12 skirt board.

The Tradeoff, Stated Plainly

Wood is a maintenance commitment. It will grey, it will check, and it will eventually splinter if you leave it alone. Expect to clean and seal it every couple of seasons to keep it looking like it did the year you built it. You are not buying a worse deck, you are choosing to pay less now and put in labor later. Some people genuinely prefer that trade, and some people tell themselves they will keep up with it and then do not. Be honest with yourself about which one you are.

When Wood Is Clearly the Right Choice

A large footprint on a tight budget. A rental or a house you do not plan to stay in for fifteen years. A rustic look you actually want, where weathered wood is the point. Or a deliberate two-stage plan: build a properly framed wood deck now, live on it for a few years, then resurface the same frame in composite later once the budget allows.

The Case for Spending More Up Front

Run the numbers over ten years before you decide. TimberTech and AZEK cost more per square foot and then cost nothing: no sanding, no staining, no sealing, no splinters underfoot. We also build in Trex. Tell us your footprint and your budget and we will price the same deck in wood and in composite side by side so you are comparing real numbers on your own project instead of averages off the internet.
