What Resurfacing Actually Means

Resurfacing keeps your existing frame and replaces everything you touch and see: the decking boards, the railing, the fascia, and the stair treads. When the structure underneath is sound, this is dramatically cheaper than tearing the whole deck out, and the finished result is indistinguishable from a new deck because every visible surface is new.

The Frame Decides Whether This Works

Before we quote a resurface we go under the deck and check the things that actually matter: the ledger board and its flashing where the deck attaches to the house, the condition of the joists and the beam, the posts at ground level, the footings, and the hardware. The ledger and the flashing are the most important, because a bad ledger connection is the single most common cause of deck failure and no amount of new decking fixes it. If the frame is sound we resurface it. If it is not, we tell you that instead of putting an expensive new surface on a structure that will not hold it.

Joist Spacing and Composite Boards

Here is the detail that catches people out. Most older decks were framed at 16 inches on center, which was fine for the lumber that was on them. Composite and PVC boards have their own span requirements, and those requirements tighten considerably if you want the boards run on a diagonal. Depending on what you choose, we may need to sister joists or add blocking to bring the spacing into range. It is not a problem, but it needs to be found and priced before the job starts rather than discovered halfway through. For reference, the decks we frame new go in at 12 inches on center.

The One Chance to Add Under-Deck Drainage

Most of our resurfaces move the deck surface to TimberTech or AZEK, which is the whole point for most people: never sealing a deck again. Beyond the boards, this is the moment to rethink the railing, which changes the look of the deck more than the decking does, and to run lighting into the posts, rails, and stair risers while the wire paths are accessible. Adding lighting later means fishing wire through a finished deck.
